I have been hooked on Eric Roberson lately…just got finished listening to “New Born Child”. I love, love, LOVE R&B…especially when someone has a beautiful voice. I wish so bad that I could sing lol so I “sing” vicariously through the songs I listen to. And…subject D to my awful warbling while I’m in the shower. While I do enjoy *real* hip-hop, nothing gets to me like some good slow songs. I, like most people I know, grew up listening to Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Michael Jackson and so many others. I also really, really, truly love Jazz. This is thanks to my Daddy. I cannot remember a weekend growing up when the sounds of Al Jarreau, Kim Pensyl, David Sanborn, George Benson, etc. did not lull me to sleep. I’m so familiar with it that there have been a few times where I’m in a grocery store with someone and I’m humming along mindlessly to a Jazz tune and they ask me, “How do you know this song??”. I remember sitting with my Daddy, in his lap, for hours listening to Jazz songs. He’d help me remember the words and we’d sing along together. I remember having cookouts in the front yard…it wasn’t complete until the big speakers were propped up in the windows and Jazz music was blasting. I’m sure you know how people associate smells, sounds, tastes with certain experiences or memories. For me, when I hear certain songs it takes me right back to being 8 years old and my parent’s card parties and family get-togethers.
